Music Discovery Experience
A program serving the School District of Lancaster

The Music Discovery Experience includes three components:
Lancaster Symphony performances at McCaskey High School,
Instrument petting zoos at the elementary schools
the Symphony’s Gift of Music instrument loan program.

Music Discovery Performances
May 19, 2008; 9:30 and 11:15 am.

The Music Discovery Experience
begins with performances at
McCaskey High School.

Over 2,800 3rd, 4th,and 5th grade
students attended
the performances on
May 19, 2008.

Students from the McCaskey band
and orchestra helped usher at
each performance!

"This activity is very beneficial to the
students.  Hearing different styles of
music exposes them to more than the
radio and current music.  The students
truly enjoyed the experience and eagerly
discussed the compositions.  It is
well organized!"

Teachers and students
prepared for the performances
using study guides and CDs
provided by the Symphony.

"Thank you for funding our field trip so
we could go to the Lancaster Symphony
Orchestra. Some things I liked were the
National Anthem, the music from
different countries and the instruments.
I liked the packet. I finished most of it.
The CD was cool also. I liked the music."

(Wharton Elementary)

"The Symphony Orchestra was
cool! I loved when they played the National
Anthem with the instruments!
And the music from different countries
was cool because I can learn a lot!
And thanks for everything you gave
us and I hope I go next year!"

Students loved seeing Christopher Kong
perform on the piano.

Chris, just 13 years old, won the
2008 Instrumental
Competition/Scholarship
in February 2008.

"Thank you for playing such wonderful
music for us. I really enjoyed listening to
all the songs you played for us.
My favorite song was Symphonic
Dances by Rachmaninoff. I also liked
when you let that 8th grade boy
play the piano.I think I would like
to play the flute or violin next year
in 4th grade."

(Fulton Elementary)

"Thank you for letting us come to your
orchestra! My favorite part was the “spicy”
Mexican music.  I also loved the piano,
because I play piano!  I loved everything
though! My favorite song was Latin Fire! My
parents and I listen to Spanish music a lot.
Thanks again! I loved it!"

(Fulton Elementary)

"Thank you for your wonderful varieties
of music. You did a wonderful job! My favorite
part was the 8th grader that played the
piano. His hair went crazy!
Next year,we will get to pick an
instrument and I want to play the harp!
I had a wonderful time!"

(Fulton Elementary)
